Green Roof

Vital Earth Green Roof Products

All our growing media are based on specially processed green compost: matured and graded to provide optimal stability and performance. Thanks to our unique cutting-edge composting technology, our compost is free of weed seeds and disease.
In all Vital Earth Green Roof media, levels of nutrient salts and potentially toxic elements (including “heavy metals”) are suitably low.

The Vital Earth Eco Range

The Eco Range is manufactured using 100% recycled materials.

Vital Earth green compost is blended with carefully selected and size-graded crushed brick to provide optimal air: water holding properties and excellent drainage. High lignin content in the green compost helps ensure good long-term physical stability (minimal slumping) and thus a healthy root zone.

Other materials (UK-sourced & sustainable) can be added on request and special media can be devised to meet particular requirements.

Thorough research, in collaboration with Harper Adams University College and the Sheffield Green Roof Centre, has demonstrated:

  • Minimal leaching of nitrogen, phosphate and organic matter

  • Efficient run-off attenuation

  • Excellent plant establishment (Sedums and meadow spp.)

  • Strong root growth

  • Good over-wintering, despite heavy snow and rainfall

  • Significant self-seeding and spp. Succession

  • Sustained biodiversity

  • Absence of slumping

Vital Earth Green Roof Media can be installed by blower truck, as well as by conventional means. All products can be delivered as palletised and wrapped 1 cu m tote bags or – for extra economy – as bulk loads (by moving-floor, or tipper wagon).

Industry experts tell us that we now lead the field: thanks partly to our research-based product development and partly to our unique quality-controlled composting process. Both inspire confidence, both deliver outstanding performance.

Green Roof

Sedum Roof Medium (Extensive)

farmyard manure

The medium is based on 14-5mm recycled clean brick and 25-10mm green compost. To ensure sustained optimal drainage properties, only dust-free brick is used. The medium provides a long-lasting reserve of potash, plus other major nutrients and trace elements, but minimal water-soluble nitrogen. The result is robust, hardy, disease-resistant growth, good foliage colour and prolific flowering.

Its drainage properties also help to maintain a healthy Sedum sward, free from invasive species.

The medium is ideal for installation of Sedum as plant mat, plugs or other transplants. A layer 75mm deep is recommended.

Meadow Roof Medium (Intensive)

farmyard manure

The medium is based on 5-2mm recycled clean brick and 10-0mm mature green compost.

The medium is ideal for installation of Meadow plants as plant mat, seed, plugs, or other transplants. A layer at least 150mm deep is recommended – more for dwarf shrubs.

The medium can also be used for “Brown Roofs”, where colonisation is to be “left to Nature”.

Lawn Roof Medium (Intensive)

farmyard manure

Like Meadow Roof Medium, Lawn Roof Medium is based on 5-2mm recycled clean brick and 10-0mm mature green compost, but it also contains sterilised recovered topsoil to enhance establishment of the sward – whether based on cultivated or wild cultivars.

The medium can also be used for “Brown Roofs”, where colonisation is “left to Nature”.

Sedum Roof-Lite Medium (Extensive)

The medium is based on Vitag 8-5mm and 25-10mm green compost.

As installed, bulk density is only 50% of the brick-based Vital Earth Eco Range and only 60% when saturated.

Plant-Raising Media

Green roofing requires plants specially-raised to facilitate efficient planting and sound establishment. Such plant-raising needs special growing media. Vital Earth has developed a range of growing media for production of:

  • Plant mat: Sedum & Meadow types

  • Plant transplants: in cell trays and other containers

Like Vital Earth Green Roof Media, these have been proven in commercial use. They are based on 5-2mm recycled clean brick and mature green compost (10-0mm and 8-0mm grades). Some products also contain sterilised recovered topsoil, and/or 8mm composted conifer bark (UK/FSC-sourced).

Like other Vital Earth growing media, all are 100% peat-free. Other materials (UK-sourced and sustainable) can be added on request and special media can be devised to meet particular requirements.

Seed Media

Specially developed to suit the production of plant matting for rapid installation of green roofs, these media are usually applied as an even layer 10mm deep over a well-levelled surface that has been lined with polythene film and/or absorbent fabric.

After irrigation and sowing, the seed bed is often covered with clear polythene film or fleece to protect it from birds and adverse weather.

Accurate irrigation is essential. Maturation of the plant mat can be advanced by informed use of fertilizers – we would be pleased to provide advice.

Sedum Seed Medium

farmyard manure

The medium is manufactured using 8mm green compost, 5-2mm recycled brick, sterilised top soil and 8mm composted bark.

Sedum seed is usually diluted with dry silver sand to aid even distribution.

The medium can also be sown with cuttings.

Meadow Seed Medium

The medium is manufactured using 8mm green compost, 5-2mm recycled brick, sterilised top soil and 8mm composted bark.

Green Prop Medium

Developed for use in modular trays and other containers, the medium is based on 10mm green compost, 5-2mm recycled brick and 12mm composted bark.

An organic, slow-release nitrogen source is added to ensure sustained growth. Controlled-release fertilizer and MET52 (biological insecticide) can be included if required.

The medium gives robust stocky growth, as preferred for green roof projects, and can be used with seed or cuttings.

Delivery

All green roof media are available in 1 m³ tote bags – palletised and wrapped – or in bulk (using tipper trucks or moving floor vehicles).

With bulk loads, installation by blower truck can be provided to reduce time and labour costs.
